The site where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.
Standing at the corner of Market and 7th Streets in Philadelphia, Declaration House marks the site where Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence in the summer of 1776. The reconstructed Colonial-era building, part of Independence National Historical Park, is adorned with Jefferson’s immortal words — “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” — a powerful reminder that on this very ground, a young nation dared to imagine freedom for all. Managed by the National Park Service, this landmark sits at the heart of America’s most historic square mile.
